EU Airports Say Goodbye to Passport Stamps: Biometric Checks Take Over

Starting October 12, 2025, European airports will phase out traditional passport stamps in favor of high-tech fingerprint and facial scans as part of a sweeping new Entry/Exit System (EES). The change hits 29 Schengen countries, aiming for smoother, more secure travel. Travelers under age 12 are exempt, but most visitors will soon see their entry and exit logged digitally instead of stamped in their passports.

The move responds to growing concerns about border security, illegal immigration, and overstays. While some people are nostalgic about passport stamps, officials say biometric data (fingerprints and facial recognition) will help speed up checks, reduce queues, and improve tracking when visitors leave. The scheme will fully roll out by April 10, 2026. Parallel to EES, the EU is also preparing a separate travel authorization system (ETIAS), expected in late 2026, for visitors from visa-exempt countries.

Privacy worries are already being raised. Collected biometric data will be kept for up to five years, and EU privacy regulators say GDPR protections will apply. Travelers are encouraged to apply for ETIAS (once it’s live) in advance to avoid last-minute issues or delays at borders.

Critics warn that the system could create confusion early on—especially at smaller airports or for travelers who are unaware of the change. But early reports suggest airports are preparing by installing new self-service kiosks, training staff, and updating signage to help people understand the process. For holidaymakers, business visitors, and students alike, what’s changing isn’t just the border formalities—it’s how Europe expects visitors to move in and out in a post-COVID, digital age.
